Victims of Chornobyl Nuclear Disaster Remembered at Metropolia Center

Faithful members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA gathered together with other Ukrainian community members at St. Andrew Memorial Church, South Bound Brook, NJ – part of the Church’s Metropolia Center – to commemorate the 30^th anniversary of the worst nuclear disaster the world has known – the explosion of the Soviet era power plant located in Chornobyl, Ukraine.  His Eminence Metropolitan Antony conducted a solemn memorial service along with clergy from the Center and neighboring parishes.  Visiting clergy, St. Sophia Seminary students and members of the Memorial Church Choir graciously and beautifully sang the responses for the service.

Following the service, the Metropolitan spoke of the importance of remembering not only the victims of the disaster who perished, but also those who survived and continue to this day to suffer the consequences of the radioactive cloud, which spread not only throughout Ukraine but all around the world.  He reminded the faithful that the truth about the accident at Chornobyl only became known because of that cloud being detected and analyzed over other nations, forcing the Soviet regime to admit the truth of the disaster.   It is still doubtful, even 30 years later that the entire truth about the accident was ever told.

His Eminence called upon all the faithful present to never permit the memory of these victims fade away.  They must be willing to speak of them and the historical event that took their lives to their children, grandchildren, to their neighbors and friends in the American community.  It is only through such diligence that we can hope to prevent further disaster.  The Metropolitan stated that the Chornobyl incident ranks as highly as the Soviet repressions over 74 years, the Holodomor and the present invasion of Eastern Ukraine where now 10,000 more lives have been senselessly lost.

Metropolitan Antony informed the faithful that during this Holy Week, two new rows of flowering trees will be planted on the grounds before the Memorial Church on each side of the drive that leads up to the church.  Those on one side will commemorate the victims of Chornobyl who perished and those on the other side will commemorate those who survive and still suffer the consequences of the disaster – the generations who can never return to the lands of Ukraine where their ancestors were born and raised.

The Metropolitan expressed his deep gratitude to the Consul General of Ukraine in New York City, Mr. Igor Sybiga, who was so kind to join in the commemoration.  Mr. Sybiga spoke of the history of the nuclear disaster and the numbers of people affected by it.  He also described the methods still being developed to permanently encase the power plant and prevent further leakage of radioactive materials.  Much assistance in this regard has come through the past three decades from other nations.  He reinforced the Metropolitans words that we must never allow the memory of this disaster to be lost.

The Consul General expressed his gratitude to the Bishops clergy and people in attendance for the commemoration stressing its importance to Ukraine and beyond.  The number of people who participate in such memorial services is not as important as the fact that they continue to be conducted – for the sake of historical accuracy and accountability.

25 квітня в Українській православній церкві св. Андрія Первозваного у Савт-Бавнд-Бруку, Нью-Джерзі, Митрополит Української Православної Церкви США і Українських православних церков діяспори Антоній в сослуженні настоятеля храму о. Юрія Сівка, оо. Івана Лишика, Василя Пасакаса, Антонія Перкаса і Василя Шаха відслужив Панахиду в пам’ять жертв Чорнобильської трагедії, яка сталася 30 років тому. У церемонії брав участь Генеральний консул України в Нью-Йорку Ігор Сибіга з дружиною Наталею і дочкою Доротеєю.

Звертаючись до присутніх Митрополит Антоній підкреслив, що за віком лише старші люди тепер пам’ятають день трагедії, але нашим обов’язком є берегти пам’ять про полеглих і постраждалих у Чорнобилі, щоб ніколи більше не повторилося таке лихо. Ми повинні розповідати про Чорнобиль і про Голодомор усім довкола нас, щоб в Америці теж знали про страждання українського народу в роки більшовицької окупації. Митрополит також говорив про воїнів, які стали жертвами російської агресії на сході України. Він оголосив, що біля храму буде насаджено алею дерев в пам’ять про незабутні жертви.

Генеральний консул Ігор Сибіга подякував американським українцям за вшанування жертв трагедії на далекій батьківській землі й підкреслив, що найбільша техногенна катастрофа була для усього людства незнаним лихом, тому що тоді ще не було жодного досвіду подолання наслідків такої біди, люди мало знали про радіяцію – невидимого ворога людського життя. Дипломат розповів, скільки людей постраждало від вибуху, які збитки він приніс економіці та природі. Він також зупинився на заходах щодо остаточного подолання наслідків Чорнобильської катастрофи і зауважив, що цій роботі перешкоджають війна на сході України, а також негаразди в самій державі, зокрема нечуваний розгул корупції. Усе ж триває останній етап перетворення Чорнобиля на безпечну зону. І. Сибіга повідомив, що саме 25 квітня на Конференції донорів Рахунку ядерної безпеки Европейського банку реконструкції та розвитку (ЕБРР) у Києві Сполучені Штати Америки офіційно оголосили про додаткові 10 млн. дол. допомоги на проведення робіт з убезпечення Чорнобильської АЕС та мешканців навколишніх територій. Цей внесок є доповненням до понад 400 млн. дол. допомоги, яку США вже надали Україні упродовж останніх 30 років, аби послабити наслідки чорнобильської катастрофи, в тому числі 377 млн. дол. для Чорнобильського фонду «Укриття» і 31 млн. евро, внесених на Рахунок ядерної безпеки.

США залишатимуться відданим партнером України в її зусиллях зі створення надійного укриття над старим саркофагом, забезпечення сховища для відпрацьованого ядерного палива, остаточного виведення Чорнобильської АЕС з експлуатації і її перетворення на екологічно безпечний і стабільний об’єкт. І. Сибіга закликав бути разом з Україною у нелегкі часи випробування її державности і нести їй постійну допомогу.
